The world's top apps, and the needs they meet
People's needs rarely change; the ways of meeting them do. Every week we follow the top grossing and top free charts of the App Store and Google Play in ten countries and in China, and take apart the first ten of each: the core need it meets, why it does better than the rest, where the money comes from, and what a team of one to three could learn.
The core needs behind this week's first ten
67 apps in the first ten of the eight lists have an analysis; each counts once, under its core need.

How the lists are made and the analyses written
- A world list adds up twenty store charts: the App Store and Google Play in the United States, the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Korea, India, Indonesia, Brazil and Mexico. First place in a chart is worth 50 points and fiftieth 1, and the list is sorted by the total, so an app high in many countries beats one at the top of only one.
- China's lists are its App Store charts as they are: there is no Google Play in mainland China.
- The grossing charts rank by spending inside the app, so they show who gets paid there; the free charts rank by downloads, so they show who is growing. Ad revenue and money made outside the app do not count.
- App Store data comes from Apple's public charts and Google Play's from the charts on its website, fetched once a week. An app in both stores counts as one.
- Each of the first ten in every list gets an analysis: one core need, up to two others, why it stays ahead, how it makes money and what a small team could learn. An AI agent drafts them, and a person reads every one before it goes up.
Twelve core needs
- Staying in touch
- Keeping up with family, friends and colleagues; belonging to a circle.
- Company
- Not feeling alone: someone, or an AI, listening and answering.
- Love
- Meeting a possible partner; being wanted.
- Entertainment
- Passing time and unwinding, carried off by stories, music and video.
- Thrill
- The jolt of a draw, a pull or a bet.
- Progress
- Seeing yourself get better: a level cleared, a rank gained, a skill learnt.
- Being seen
- Making things and showing yourself; being seen and approved of.
- Getting things done
- Getting a task done with less time and effort.
- Knowing
- Finding things out, understanding, keeping up with the world.
- Money
- Paying less, selling what you don't need, earning a little more.
- Peace of mind
- Knowing family is safe and accounts are secure.
- Errands
- Things that must be done, taxes, ID, bills: the quicker the better.
Fourteen reasons to stay ahead
- Network effects
- The more people use it, the more useful it is; everyone is already there.
- Endless supply
- Something new every day: uploads, a licensed library or AI.
- The feed
- No choosing, just scrolling; it learns what you like.
- Daily habit
- A reason to come back every day: streaks, check ins, energy.
- Live operations
- Events, seasons and new levels without end.
- Better product
- Clearly better at the core thing.
- Price
- Cheaper than elsewhere, or free.
- Brand and IP
- People knew it already: the brand, the characters, the stars.
- Ecosystem
- Preinstalled, or tied to an account or a bigger platform.
- Switching cost
- Your data, contacts or progress live here; leaving is costly.
- Playing together
- Alliances, teams and leaderboards: with or against others.
- Easy start
- Anyone can use it at once, with a reward within seconds.
- Paid growth
- Heavy ad spending to buy users, paid back by those who pay.
- Mandated
- The only way to do this thing.
The lists show places in the stores, not actual downloads or revenue. App names and icons belong to their developers and are here only to say which app is meant. Nothing here is investment or business advice. Found a mistake? Write to [email protected].
